Serengeti Migration Safari

The Serengeti Migration safari is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet, drawing travelers from around the world to witness nature’s grandest journey. Every year, over a million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, embark on a continuous cycle of movement across the vast Serengeti plains and into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This incredible migration follows the rains and fresh grazing, creating dramatic scenes of animals crossing rivers teeming with crocodiles and facing predators like lions and cheetahs along the way. It’s a dynamic and ever-changing spectacle that offers endless opportunities for unforgettable wildlife sightings.

Beyond the breathtaking animal movement, a Serengeti Migration safari immerses visitors in the heart of East Africa’s wilderness. Game drives and guided walks take you close to the action, while expert guides share fascinating insights into the behaviors and survival strategies of the migrating herds. Whether watching newborn calves take their first steps or witnessing the tense river crossings, the migration embodies the raw power and beauty of the natural world. For anyone seeking an authentic and thrilling safari experience, the Serengeti Migration is a must-see event that showcases the incredible rhythms of life on the African plains.

Why Do Wildebeest Migrate

The Serengeti Wildebeest Migration is a dynamic and awe-inspiring event, driven by the search for fresh grazing and water. Key moments in the migration include the dramatic river crossings, particularly at the Mara River, where wildebeest and other animals must navigate treacherous waters teeming with crocodiles, creating intense, thrilling scenes. Another remarkable aspect is the calving season, when thousands of wildebeest are born, attracting predators and creating a high-stakes environment where the calves must quickly adapt to survive. Throughout the migration, massive herds of wildebeest move across the Serengeti in search of new grazing areas, with the vast landscape and overwhelming number of animals combining to create one of nature’s most spectacular sights.

Best Time to Go

From January to March, the Serengeti experiences the calving season, and predators are plentiful, taking advantage of the vulnerable newborns. During this time, the herds are mostly in the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. From April to May, the herds begin moving northwest, following the rains and fresh grass, making their way toward the Western Corridor of the Serengeti and crossing the Grumeti River. Between June and August, the migration reaches the northern Serengeti, including dramatic crossings of the Mara River, with high predator activity adding to the excitement.

From September to October, the herds continue into the northern Serengeti and spill over into Kenya’s Maasai Mara, making it an excellent time for safaris in both regions. Finally, from November to December, the herds start moving back south to the Serengeti’s southern plains, following the onset of the short rains and completing the cycle of this iconic wildlife journey.
